Are you a Pretender?

God says I died with Christ and that I no longer live (Gal.2:20). That means when Jesus died on the cross He didn’t die by Himself for me or instead of me (Rom. 6:6). He had become me, identifying with my old self so that His death could change my life whether I knew it or not (2 Cor.5:21).

God also says that all humanity died in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:14-15). That means all humanity has died to the old self. Christ, the second Adam, replaced all the progeny of the first Adam when He died and rose again with a new race of humanity (Rom.5:19). All mankind has had their lives changed through His death but unfortunately most, even believers, don’t realize it or prefer not to believe it. If they don’t believe it, it will not benefit them. They still live in or battle their sinful condition until they accept fully what Christ has done.

When Christ and I died we left the old self, the man infected with the spirit of error (1 Jn.4:6) or sin, in the grave. That lie or error was the illusion that I had a separate life from God, believing that I was created as a separate being outside of Him. It says I could be like God with the ability to live a moral life on my own (Gen.3:5). That is false (Isa. 45:5). Nothing exists outside of God. God says everything exists and has its being in Him (Acts 17:28). If we believe we are separate from God we live in the false illusion of the lie.

When I died with Christ God says I also rose with Him (Rom.6:8). I rose with Him into a new creation life, the restored image of union with God (2 Cor.5:17). I am restored to being in God through Christ. Since “I” don’t live anymore the only life I have is Christ. Even though I am still alive He is my life. I have no other life. This is the great mystery of our faith (Col.1:27,Eph.5:32).

But if we don’t believe our life really is Christ, that we have no other life, we still believe in the illusion, the lie. That means we are “pretending” to have a life of our own (Rom.6:2). Tragically, many believers are pretenders because they believe they still must become like God, that it is up to them to conduct their lives according to the Bible so that God will be pleased with them. The lie says I can become like God choosing the right way to live through my own reason and ability. It holds I can attain a form of righteousness through my own effort. Even most believers think that all they need is to add Christ to their lives and He will help them achieve what God expects. Pretending to live my own life, even religiously, is nothing more than pretending to be someone other than the real you (Rom. 3:10; Jn. 15:5).

Christ is the only life who is real. He is the only Truth. He is the only way to live (Jn.14:6). Your old life is gone, it is dead. Your existence can only be in Him.
