The Seven Needs of Man #7 – To Know the Love of God.

The 23rd Psalm is perhaps the most commonly recited Biblical passage by people in and outside of the Christian community. It is a comforting picture of the providence of God, but it is also a description of man’s essential needs. Here are those needs expressed in the context of ministering to men.

Need No. 7 – Men need to know they are loved and pursued by God   v. 6

He is total love even though man’s mistrust has lead to the opposite perception. The Psalmist affirmed this truth in declaring that God would never stop “pursuing” him and that he always had a place in God’s house. It was this depiction that led Francis Thompson in his famous 1893 poem to call God the “Hound of heaven”, always chasing after man wherever he tries to go or hide. This is God’s true nature.

The Bible says that even while man was still a sinner God showed His love nature in sending Christ (God Himself in the flesh) to rescue man (Rom 5:8). It is not that man loved God so that He would save him, but that God loved him first by sending His son long before man knew he even needed a Savior (1 Jn. 4:10). He is so in love with man that the Bible speaks of His heart being “ravished” like a husband for his bride (Song of Sol 3:9). There is no greater story of this truth than Jesus’ depiction of the father with the prodigal son. The father rejoiced to see his son return without judging or punishing him. The “punishment” was in the son’s own misery, the result of his own bad choices. Realizing that his father truly loved him and gladly welcomed him home resulted in the son’s restoration and life transformation.

This is the great need of man – to know he is valued enough to be rescued no matter the cost! He needs to realize how much He is loved by God no matter what he has done or thinks about himself. This is why Paul prays that men would have the power to understand the immeasurable nature of God’s love for him through Christ (Eph. 3:18). It is through coming to a fuller understanding of this truth that a man is freed from his fear and guilt and his heart is renewed.

Men don’t need to be reminded that they are sinners, have “blown it” or fall short. Not even Jesus did that because men already knew it (Jn 3:17). What they do need to know is how God views them, that He considers them worth dying for and that He still keeps pursuing them with loving passion, desiring to release them into their full, created potential. The love of God is the greatest liberating force. When men experience it they not only start naturally loving God but their hearts overflow with love for others (1Jn.4:11,12). His love flowing out of their hearts automatically fulfills the greatest commandment and causes the world to truly recognize God.

Let Him love and chase you. Relax into His waiting arms and see the life that He has planned for you all along.
